Getting to Know Rachel

Q: When/how did you become involved with Lightbearers?
A: I first heard about Lightbearers through a friend as I was finishing my last semester of college. After hearing the mission and vision of LB, I was highly interested and applied for a discipleship staff position. And then I met the staff and their families— it was then that I knew I wanted to be involved. I worked as a discipleship staffer from 2011-2016, took a break to help start a church in the area, and now I’m back again!

Q: What is your favorite book and/or quote?
A: Favorite book: Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis.
Favorite quote: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them and they will be his people, and God himself will be their God.” Revelation 21:3”

Q: What excites you about the Lightbearers vision?
A: I get excited about the process of connecting students to Jesus through their church. I believe this is one of the strongest points in how Lightbearers works— Lightbearers can go away, but the body of Christ will remain forever. If students get this during their college years, I believe it will strengthen their relationship with Jesus and others, changing the way they seek him and make him known.

Q: Other than Jesus, what Bible character would you want to have lunch with?
A: John, who wrote the book of John and Revelation.

Q: Other than Bible characters, what three people, living or dead, would you want to have lunch with?
A: 1. Amy Carmichael. She was extremely creative, on fire for Jesus, and knew the joy of suffering well in Jesus.
2. Martin Luther. Out of many of the early church reformers, his testimony and writings strike me the most. Also he makes me belly laugh. He shaped how I study theology.
3. Ruth Chou Simons. Wife, mother of 6 boys, entrepreneurial artist and writer, who boldly proclaims the gospel through her work and life. An inspiration to me.

Q: What does a fun, relaxing day look like for you?
A: Fireplace. Books. Tea and coffee, with cream. A hike. A run by the river. Drawing and painting trees and mountains. Writing. A delicious dinner of homemade fried chicken at my table with family and friends. Maybe a game of Ticket To Ride while we smack talk and laugh. Dancing and snuggles with my daughter Evie. The best day would include prayer time alone with my journal. And it would be best if this day was in the middle of fall.
